Stage Names in BTS RM Jin, Jimin & Jung Kook SUGA j-hope V What This Tells Us

A Mixed Naming Structure, Member by Member

BTS has a mixed naming structure in which some members use stage names while others use their real names. Some chose names that reflect a concept or message, while others kept their birth names as they are. In several cases, stage names also changed over time or took on broader meanings after debut.

RM

RM's real name is Kim Namjoon. Before debut, he was active under the name "Runch Randa," later used "Rap Monster," and in 2017 changed his stage name to "RM." Today, the name is no longer fixed to a single meaning and is often interpreted in multiple ways, including "Real Me" and "Respect Me."

Jin, Jimin & Jung Kook

Jin uses "Jin," taken directly from his real name Kim Seokjin. Jimin (Park Jimin) and Jung Kook (Jeon Jungkook) also use their real names as their stage names. These are cases where the members kept names that felt natural and easy for the public to recognize, rather than assigning a separate meaning.

SUGA

SUGA's real name is Min Yoongi. Before debut, he was active under the name "gloss," and the stage name "SUGA" was formed through several different influences. It has been explained as coming from the basketball position "shooting guard," while also being associated with the image of "sugar" and the idea of "addictiveness" in hip-hop. More recently, a more specific background was revealed: that the name was inspired by boxer "Sugar" Ray Leonard. As a result, the name has become established as one layered with multiple meanings. His solo name "Agust D" is built by reversing "SUGA" and adding a reference to "SUGA from Daegu."

j-hope

j-hope's real name is Jung Hoseok. His stage name combines the initial "J" from his surname with "Hope," expressing his desire to become a source of hope for fans. It is known to be a name he chose himself. It has also been explained that the idea was inspired by "hope," the final thing left in Pandora's box in Greek mythology. He has consistently emphasized this meaning through his signature introduction: "I'm your hope, I'm your angel, I'm J-Hope."

V

V's real name is Kim Taehyung. The name "V" stands for "Victory," and is said to have been selected from candidates such as "Lex" and "Sis" before debut. The focus was on leaving a strong impression through a short, symbolic name.

What This Tells Us

As seen in BTS's case, stage names are not unified under a single standard. Different approaches coexist: names that changed from pre-debut identities (RM), names layered with multiple meanings (SUGA), names centered on symbolism and message (j-hope, V), and names that simply retain the members' real names (Jin, Jimin, Jung Kook).

In particular, some members directly embedded their personal direction and message into their stage names, showing that these names function not just as labels, but as part of their artistic identity.
